David E. Schroeder, Ed.D.
Chancellor of Pillar College
President, MasterWorks, Inc.
Ed.D. New York University
STM New York Theological Seminary
M.A. Manhattanville College
B.A. Nyack College
Dr. David Schroeder is Chancellor of Pillar College where he served as President from 2007-2021. He was also president of the Reformed Episcopal Seminary for three years and Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary for twelve years. Besides his work in Christian higher education, he has served in missions with International Teams, Trans World Radio, and The Christian and Missionary Alliance, under whom he was ordained in 1974. He is also founder and president of MasterWorks, Inc., a disciple-making ministry that assists pastors and local churches.
A graduate of Nyack College, Manhattanville College, New York Theological Seminary and New York University, Dr. Schroeder pastored churches in New York, New Jersey, England, and New England. On the missional front, he has served overseas and at home with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, Trans World Radio and International Teams, and continues preaching and teaching ministries in Africa and Asia.
Christ-centered higher education has been David’s first passion. During his twelve years at Nyack, the college and seminary grew from 700 to 3100 students, expanded to six extension sites, including Manhattan, and developed ten new graduate programs. But more importantly, thousands of students were trained to be “worshipping warriors.” He especially enjoys teaching courses in Bible, Theology, Worldviews, and Apologetics. As college president, he also pastored three NJ redevelopment churches.
He is the author of twelve books, the most recent ones being The Lion, the Church, and the Warfare (2020) and Come & Go – The Disciple-making Strategy of Jesus (2021). This is a course on “Making Disciples who make Disciples.”
Serving the next generation within a context of spiritual renewal, ethnic diversity, and Christ-centered higher education has been his passion for over forty years.
MasterWorks began as an idea in the 1970s when a young David Schroeder decided it was important to find a way to make disciples of the men in his church. It was formalized into a non-profit 501(c)3 in 1990.
Using the Gospel of Luke, Pastor Schroeder identified the 15 passages where Jesus was giving instructions to his disciples about what it meant to follow him. He discovered two factors that differ substantially from other discipleship materials:
Jesus emphasized character qualities, not spiritual disciplines.
The discipleship teachings of Jesus are arranged in an orderly systematic sequence in the Gospel, as Luke1:1-4 says.
Since making disciples is the command of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:20), which Jesus gave to us, modern disciples need to understand and use the teachings and strategy Jesus taught. That is why the MasterWorks “Follow Me” material is still a widely important teaching in the life of MasterWorks, Inc. today. Come & Go carries on that teaching in a course style,
David and Betzi reside in Jacksonville, Florida, have been married for over five decades, have raised three children and enjoy their eight grandchildren.
